Harris County Wolves – 1938

Source: Valgene W. Lehmann Papers, Dolph Briscoe Center for American History

Wolves used to roam Texas in large numbers and held on to their territory until the mid 20th century. These notes on wolf encounters in Harris County were found in the Valgene W. Lehmann papers at the Briscoe Center. They document the smaller red wolves, which are now the most endangered canids on the planet. It’s surprising to see so many near Houston.

Quite a few Red Wolves around here. One was seen a month ago. Four or five stay in the vicinity. Hunters frequently run them with dogs but seldom catch them.
