Charles Goodnight saved the last of the Texas bison from extinction and never wasted an opportunity to tell his story. He even went as far as producing an autobiogrpahical silent film called “Old Texas.” You can view it below courtesy of the Texas Archive of the Moving Image.
It contains some fascinating footage of the “last buffalo hunt,” a bison hunting party that he staged with friends and members of the Kiowa tribe on his ranch. As you might expect of a film from this period, it is painfully patronizing. Still, it’s cool to see the ancestors of the state bison herd in motion!
